If you love the outdoors then Mount Desert Island is for you!

Enjoy hiking the many trails (I have guides available) of Acadia National Park, some of which are nearby the house.

Myst Haven Cottage is only a 5 minute walk to the Seawall Beach portion of Acadia National Park.  Wonderland and Ship's Harbor are both nearby as well. There are many hiking trails in the park.  I love driving up to the summit of Cadillac mountain to watch the sunset.

You can charter a fishing boat out of Southwest Harbor for sightseeing or drive to Bar Harbor for a Whale Watching or Puffin Cruise.  There is also a Windjammer Cruise aboard The Margaret Todd.

In Bar Harbor (a 20 minute drive) you can enjoy fine dining, shopping and movies.  Visit one of the many restaurants and then see a movie at The Criterion Theater, an art deco movie house on Cottage Street.

Bar Harbor is a major port of call for some large cruise ships and in the fall you almost certain to catch one in Bar Harbor.

Check out the link below for my blog about this beautiful spot in Acadia.

Mount Desert Island also has a large artist community and the breathtaking views are nourishment for any artist looking for inspiration.

You must make sure to enjoy popovers and tea at Jordan Pond House (they also have a full menu).

On the 4th of July is a wonderful parade and fireworks in Bar Harbor. I always enjoy the 4th complete with pancake breakfast before the parade and lobster dinner after the parade, all at the local ball field.

There is swimming at Echo Lake Beach, a 10 minute drive from the house, or Sand Beach in Acadia National Park (a 25 minute drive). Sand Beach is the ocean so it can be a bit chilly even in August and Echo Lake is fresh water.  I prefer Echo Lake or Long Pond.  You can rent kayaks at Long Pond in Somesville or swim there as well.  We can provide directions to any of these places.

The wildlife on the island is plentiful.  You may hear the haunting call of the Loon or Coyotes howling at night.  Keep your eyes open for the Bald Eagles.  I see them frequently.  If you take a cruise you will see whales and puffins, as well as seals.  Deer are plentiful on the island and they pass through my yard each day.
